Privacy policy

The short version
The Signal Says app collects no personal data. It has no account, no ads and no analytics, and it never sends anything to us. Your labels, settings and signal diary stay on your phone. This website uses no cookies and no tracking.
Who we are
The Signal Says app and the website signalsays.co.uk are provided by Major Oak Software Ltd (“we”, “us”). For anything about this policy or your data, email hello@signalsays.co.uk.
The app
What the app reads, and why
To show your label, the app reads your phone’s mobile signal level (the same 0 to 4 level that draws the bars), the network type (for example 4G or 5G), whether aeroplane mode is on and whether a SIM card is inserted. This happens on your phone only. It is not sent anywhere.
What the app keeps on your phone
- Your labels and settings, such as the label set you chose and the widget colours.
- The signal diary: a list of times your signal level changed, recorded only while “Show in status bar” is on. It contains no location. Entries older than five weeks are deleted automatically.
All of this is deleted if you uninstall the app or clear its data. If you have Android backup turned on, Android may include the app’s settings in your own encrypted Google backup. That backup is controlled by you and Google, not us.
Permissions
- Notifications: to show the label in the status bar, the “signal’s back” alert and the optional weekly recap.
- Display over other apps (optional): only if you switch on the floating label.
- Run at start-up: to switch the label back on after your phone restarts, if you had it on.
The app does not ask for your location, contacts, calls, microphone or camera. When you scan a friend’s QR code, the scanning is done on your phone by Google Play services, which only hands the app the code it read. Google’s privacy policy applies to Google Play services.
Sharing labels
Sharing happens only when you choose to, through the app you pick (for example a messaging app). The code you share contains only your labels.
Purchases
The one-off unlock is bought through Google Play. Google handles the payment; we never see your card or payment details. Google tells the app whether you have bought the unlock so it can switch it on. Google’s privacy policy applies to payments.
Crash and performance statistics
We do not add any analytics or crash-reporting tools to the app. If you have chosen to share usage and diagnostics with app developers in your Android settings, Google may give us anonymous, combined statistics such as crash rates. These do not identify you.
This website
signalsays.co.uk sets no cookies and uses no analytics, advertising or tracking. It is hosted by IONOS, whose servers keep standard technical logs (such as IP address, the page requested, the time and your browser type) for a short period, to keep the site running and secure. We do not use these logs to identify anyone.
If you email us
We use your email address and message only to reply to you. We keep the conversation for as long as we need it to help you, then delete it.
Legal basis
Under UK data protection law (UK GDPR), we rely on our legitimate interests to reply to your emails and to keep the website secure. Google processes purchases under its own terms with you.
Children
Signal Says is not aimed at children under 13. The optional ready-made label sets contain mild language.
Your rights
You have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to how we use it. Because the app keeps everything on your phone, we hold no app data about you; uninstalling the app deletes it. Email hello@signalsays.co.uk for any request. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update this page and the date at the top. See also our terms of use.
